Quick Review-The Tears of Mary

About the Book:
(from Amazon)
Austin Brock is a typical Indiana farm boy who grew up in the mid nineteen seventies, handsome, hardworking, and raised with a strong religious foundation. But Austin was not content with spending the rest of his life shoveling silage; he aspired to see what more the world would offer. Never in his wildest dreams could he imagine what his future had in store. His ticket off the farm came in the form of an acceptance letter to Notre Dame. Notre Dame was where Austin befriended and also betrayed the trust of his roommate Tommy O'Shea. Tommy was also a farm lad, but on a different scale, the O'Shea's were a wealthy aristocratic family from Ireland. All was well until Tommy confided in Austin and revealed a secret only known by a select few families or clans in Europe and parts of the Christian community in the Middle East. The "secret" is an unwritten lore of great biblical significance, revealing a priceless gift of unbelievable beauty, and mysterious powers. However you will find out this beauty was not meant to be seen by all eyes. Little did Tommy know that his trusted secret would end up in print, get Austin in hot water with the University and end the boys' friendship. The betrayed roommate would leave his American counterpart and return to his homeland, little did Tommy know that the secret lore he shared with Austin would come back to haunt his Irish family.Austin would go to Ireland a few years later to find Tommy, not as a friend, but as a United States Navy Seal; he would be working in conjunction with the C.I.A. and British intelligence.Apparently, Austin wasn't the only one who found out about Tommy's Irish lore. According to secret intelligence one wealthy treasure hunter is willing to fund terror groups in return for finding and retrieving this priceless bounty. Worse yet, some intelligence suggest that reward for this treasure will be paid not in currency or bonds, but something much worse. The "much worse" part is why the United States and England are frantically searching as well.

My Review:
This was an interesting tale! I am very thankful to Mr. Sweeney for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book! It was entertaining AND thought provoking. I'm not a religious scholar but I find the mysteries of the Bible very intriguing so this was right on the mark for me! If you like books that combine all sorts of genres (mystery, drama, religious intrigues) then this is a book for you! I'd highly recommend it!

Review-After

About the Book:

An infant left in the trash to die. A teenage mother who never knew she was pregnant . . .

Before That Morning, these were the words most often used to describe straight-A student and star soccer player Devon Davenport: responsible, hardworking, mature. But all that changes when the police find Devon home sick from school as they investigate the case of an abandoned baby. Soon the connection is made—Devon has just given birth; the baby in the trash is hers. After That Morning, there’s only one way to define Devon: attempted murderer.

And yet gifted author Amy Efaw does the impossible— she turns Devon into an empathetic character, a girl who was in such deep denial that she refused to believe she was pregnant. Through airtight writing and fast-paced, gripping storytelling, Ms. Efaw takes the reader on Devon’s unforgettable journey toward clarity, acceptance, and redemption.

My Review:
I JUST finished this book and had to rush to my computer to write this review. Wow! Have you ever read a book that brought out so many emotions in you that you just couldn't put it down? Well this was it for me! I wanted to hate Devon for what she did, but I found myself feeling sorry for her. She wasn't innocent, but you sympathize with her. Her actions make sense in a way but you cannot forgiver her for them. I loved the ending. I felt it was the most honest and emotional ending this story could have had. I would have been quite upset if Amy Efaw had gone the "Hollywood" route. I cannot remember when I have openly cried while reading a book, but this one did it. There are so many emotional scenes that I cannot pinpoint the most touching one. That's it. I won't say anything else and let you read it for yourself. Something I STRONGLY recommend doing!

Review-Dancing With Ana

From the Back Cover:

Beth is a lucky girl...She comes from a loving family. She has three best friends. She loves to surg and lives five minutes from the beach. She also recently discovered that the boy she's grown up with has the most amazing green eyes...Beth has every reason to smile. Every reason to be happy. Every reason to feel blessed.

Then why is she sticking her fingers down her throat?

My Review:

Dancing with Ana was a quick read. It's only about 170 pages in total so it won't take too long to read. The story's concept is good. Maybe I'm not the right target audience for this one. I hesitated to write a review because this is a cause that is close to my heart. I've had issues (and still do to this day) with disordered eating/thinking. The characters didn't really seem like teenagers. The boys didn't really act at ALL like teenage males. I hate to make this sound like a bad book because it's not. It's just not a book intended for grown ups. Which is a good thing in a way because teenagers are the ones most afflicted by ED's. So would I recommend this book for anyone over the age of 18? Probably not. Does it do what it intends. I think so. I rarely put number ratings on my reviews but here goes:

Writing: 8
Interest: 7
Passion: 9
Originality: 8
Characters: 6

I could tell that this topic was something that Barker was passionate about and I could tell she understood, but it just didn't flow as well as I would have hoped. Maybe if the book was fleshed out a little more, say add some more pages?

Blog Tour-Knit For Love

Summary for The Sweetgum Ladies Knit for Love

Once a month, the six women of the Sweetgum Knit Lit Society gather to discuss books and share their knitting projects. Inspired by her recently-wedded bliss, group leader Eugenie chooses “Great Love Stories in Literature” as the theme for the year’s reading list–a risky selection for a group whose members span the spectrum of age and relationship status. As the Knit Lit ladies read and discus classic romances like Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice, each member is confronted with her own perception about love. Camille’s unexpected reunion with an old crush forces her to confront conflicting desires. Newly widowed Esther finds her role in Sweetgum changing and is surprised by two unlikely friends. Hannah isn’t sure she’s ready for the trials of first love. Newcomer Maria finds her life turned upside-down by increasing family obligations and a handsome, arrogant lawyer, and Eugenie and Merry are both asked to make sacrifices for their husbands that challenge their principles. Even in a sleepy, southern town like Sweetgum, Tennessee, love isn’t easy. The Knit Lit ladies learn they can find strength and guidance in the novels they read, the love of their family, their community–and especially in each other.

Blog Tour-Rose House

Summary for Rose House

A vivid story of a private grief, a secret painting, and one woman’s search for hope. Still mourning the loss of her family in a tragic accident, Lillian Diamon finds herself drawn back to the Rose House, a quiet cottage where four years earlier she had poured out her anguish among its fragrant blossoms. She returns to the rolling hills and lush vineyards of the Sonoma Valley in search of something she can’t quite name. But then Lillian stumbles onto an unexpected discovery: displayed in the La Rosaleda Gallery is a painting that captures every detail of her most private moment of misery, from the sorrow etched across her face to the sandals on her feet. What kind of artist would dare to intrude on such a personal scene, and how did he happen to witness Lillian’s pain? As the mystery surrounding the portrait becomes entangled with the accident that claimed the lives of her husband and children, Lillian is forced to rethink her assumptions about what really happened that day. A captivating novel rich with detail, Rose House explores how the brushstrokes of pain can illuminate the true beauty of life.

Blog Tour-The Confidential Life of Eugenia Cooper

Summary for The Confidential Life of Eugenia Cooper

The future is clearly mapped out for New York socialite Eugenia “Gennie” Cooper, but she secretly longs to slip into the boots of her favorite dime-novel heroine and experience just one adventure before settling down. When the opportunity arises, Gennie jumps at the chance to experience the Wild West, but her plans go awry when she is drawn into the lives of silver baron Daniel Beck and his daughter and finds herself caring for them more than is prudent–especially as she’s supposed to go back to New York and marry another man.

As Gennie adapts to the rough-and-tumble world of 1880s Colorado, she must decide whether her future lies with the enigmatic Daniel Beck or back home with the life planned for her since birth. The question is whether Daniel’s past–and disgruntled miners bent on revenge–will take that choice away from her.

Kathleen Y’Barbo is the best-selling, award-winning author of more than thirty novels, novellas, and young adult books, with more than a half-million in print. A graduate of Texas A&M University, she is currently a publicist with Books & Such literary agency.

My Review:

Eugenia Cooper is a head-strong woman that is bored by the everyday goings on in her life. She's a debutante but longs for the freedom of the "Wild West" she reads about in her dime store novels. Her idol is a female cowgirl named Mae Winslow. She sees an opportunity to find her adventure before a wealthy banker snatches her away to be his bride. She hatches a plot that leads her smack dab in a situation she isn't really prepared for. This book is well written and Y'Barbo has created many lovable characters. From the start to the finish I had a wonderful time following Miss Cooper along with her adventure and seeing just where it would take her! This is definitely worth a read!

Philosoraptor Say What?

Okay, once I've reviewed Knit For Love, I won't have another book tour read for a while, so I'm a little stumped. I'm wondering if some of you lovely people have any suggestions for me? What to read? Watch? Etc. After starting my job I've kinda fallen out of the loop, so I'm not 100% on what's out right now and what's "hot." It will seriously take me a few years to plow through Google Reader! So throw some titles at me!

Blog Tour-Undone

About the Book:

In the trauma center of Atlanta’s busiest hospital, Sara Linton treats the city’s poor, wounded, and unlucky—and finds refuge from the tragedy that rocked her life in rural Grant County. Then, in one instant, Sara is thrust into a frantic police investigation, coming face-to-face with a tall driven detective and his quiet female partner…. In Undone, three unforgettable characters from Karin Slaughter’s New York Times bestselling novels Faithless and Fractured collide for the first time, entering an electrifying race against the clock—and a duel with unspeakable human evil.

In the backwoods of suburban Atlanta, where Sara’s patient was found, local police have set up their investigation. But Georgia Bureau of Investigation detective Will Trent doesn’t wait for the go-ahead from his boss—he plunges through police lines, through the brooding woods, and single-handedly exposes a hidden house of horror buried beneath the earth. Then he finds another victim.…

Wresting the case away from the local police chief, Will and his partner, Faith Mitchell—a woman keeping explosive secrets of her own—are called into a related investigation. Another woman—a smart, upscale, independent young mother—has been snatched. For the two cops out on the hunt, for the doctor trying to bring her patient back to life, the truth hits like a hammer: the killer’s torture chamber has been found, but the killer is still at work.

In her latest suspense masterpiece, Karin Slaughter weaves together the moving, powerful human stories of characters as real as they are complex and unforgettable. At the same time she has crafted a work of dazzling storytelling and spine-tingling mystery—as three people, each with their own wounds and their own secrets, are all that stands between a madman and his next crime.

Her Work

My Review:

This was a definite break from what I usually read. Edgy, suspenseful, horrifying, nail-biting, and awesome! Karin Slaughter knows her stuff. She knows how to keep you flipping the pages and keeps you gasping for breath! There are several scenes that had me cringing (and I consider myself to have an iron clad tummy.)

At work I could not wait until it was break time so I could read more! This book is definitely one of those that you need to devote a full day to! You will not want to put it down for anything! The characters are realistic and very well written. Slaughter knows her stuff when it comes to criminal investigations. This book in some ways was like reading an episode of CSI..but better!
I'd definitely recommend Undone for anyone that loves a good thriller! I'm a fan now! Thanks again to Dorothy Thompson from Pump Up Your Book Promotion for sending me yet another awesome book!

About the book:

Knit shop owner and sorcerer's daughter Chloe Hobbs felt the Fates finally got it right when she met Luke MacKenzie. And no one could have convinced her otherwise—including the trolls, selkies, or spirits who also call Sugar Maple, Vermont, home. But then out of nowhere Luke's ex-wife suddenly shows up, claiming to see the spirit of their daughter, Steffie—a daughter Chloe knows nothing about.

Steffie's spirit is being held hostage by a certain Fae leader. And if Chloe weaves a spell to free her spirit, her nemesis will also be free—free to destroy her yarn shop and all of Sugar Maple. But if she doesn't, Steffie won't be the only one spending eternity in hell. Chloe'll be joining her, cursed with a broken heart.

My Review:
Who would have thought that I would actually enjoy a book about the supernatural and....knitting, but I did! This book is the second in a series, but don't let that stop you from picking up Laced! I haven't had the pleasure of reading the first book, Casting Spells, but I was able to understand and follow the story line. I do recommend, just for helping the story flow a bit more easily, picking up the first one and reading them in order.

I loved the strange little town of Sugar Maple, and all of it's quirky inhabitants. They've got vampires, werewolves, fairies, and trolls...and a half human sorceress in training, who just so happens to be a genius knitter! They all live together in the town under a protection spell that keeps their supernatural secret safe.

Ms. Bretton has crafted a story that has enough to please anyone's tastes! Laced has romance, suspense, mystery, and heartbreak! I didn't think this would be my cup of tea but I was very wrong. I'm very delighted to be allowed to join in this blog tour! Thanks to Dorothy Thompson at Pump Up Your Book Promotion
for the opportunity!

Blog Tour-Seduce Me by Robyn DeHart

But before he finds it, he encounters an equally alluring treasure--the woman bold enough to look inside.

Esme Worthington can't resist taking the tiniest peek inside when fate drops the real Pandora's Box in her lap. Thus, she unleashes one of Pandora's irresistible curses: the curse of lust. Now, both Esme and Fielding must deal with this passionate curse--or blessing?--before unknown implications of Pandora's Box overpower them both.

About the Author :

Robyn DeHart has published four books with Avon: Courting Claudia, A Study in Scandal, Deliciously Wicked, and Tempted At Every Turn. Known for her unique plotlines and authentic characters, Robyn is a favorite among readers and reviewers. Publishers' Weekly claims her writing to be "comical and sexy" while the Chicago Tribune dubs her "wonderfully entertaining." A two-time Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice award nominee, Robyn has earned 4 star and 4 ¿ star top pick reviews on all her books and Kathe Robin says, "Like Amanda Quick, DeHart [will] keep you up all night."

Super Fun Facts
About the Book :

1. To date, Esme Worthington is my favorite heroine I’ve ever written. Esme says whatever she’s thinking, and she’s brave with a wicked sense of humor.

2. The first three chapters of Seduce Me practically wrote themselves; they went so quickly and were so much fun. The rest of the book proved more challenging, but was still fun nonetheless.

3. The concept behind the cursed bracelets in Seduce Me was gently borrowed from The Mummy Returns. Come to find out there are actually real-life Pandora bracelets that are quite popular.

4. I have a degree in Sociology with a focus on deviant behavior. Seduce Me was the first book where I was able to apply my education to create a mastermind criminal.

5. The concept behind the Legend Hunters series and the gentleman’s club Solomon’s came from my love of archaeology and treasure hunting as well as great adventure/romance movies like Indiana Jones and The Mummy.

Quick Note

Just a quick little update on why my blog has been a wee bit quiet lately.

My son just started kindergarten (on Monday) so we've all had to adjust our schedules, so lots of sleepy people now live here. I've also started a new job so that's another thing to adjust to. To mix it all together, my husband has also had to shift his schedule to fit around our two schedules. Also, mix in a karate class .so you see folks I'm tired. lol. I promise you it will not take me too much longer to get used to this and I will be back in the swing of things, but for now please be patient! :)

Your faithful servant,
Melissa

Congratulations!

Quick Review-It's a Snap!

Amazon Info:
In 1877 in Rochester, New York, George Eastman couldn’t understand why picture-taking was so difficult. Having left school at fourteen to support his mother and two sisters, George decided to find out by making photography his hobby. He packed up glass plates, a plate holder, a tent, a heavy tripod, a thick piece of black cloth, a water jug, and chemicals and set off to take his first photograph.

George realized that not many people could own a camera — they were too expensive and the size of today’s microwave ovens! But how could he make picture-taking easier? Eventually, George created dry plates, and they were such a success that he opened his own dry-plate company in 1881. But this was only the beginning — George went on to invent film and the Brownie camera. The rest is history.

My review:

Ever heard the phrase, "a picture is worth a thousand words?" Well this guy , George Eastman, was the one who said it first! This kids book tells the story of a man, George, who wanted a hobby. He picked up a camera and history was made. He turned a fun hobby into a HUGE company! From George Eastman's ideas Kodak was born.

This book was very pretty. The cover and the art on the pages was very well done! My son loved the pictures and so did I! This book is being released August 11th and is perfect (and I mean it!) for kids ages 4 and up.

Quick Review-Milestones

Amazon Description:
One day. Just one day. That's how long it took for fourteen year-old Faye Martin's ordinary life to take a dramatic and completely unexpected turn. First, she gets struck by lightning a strange and awful experience in itself, but then made worse because Benjamin Parker, the object of her obsession, witnessed her near-death experience. Then she comes home to find her parents are forcing her to leave her friends and hometown of Seattle to attend a summer camp, aptly named Camp Milestone. After several failed attempts to change her parents mind Faye finds herself on a plane headed across the country to a camp she has never heard of.

Only, Camp Milestone is no ordinary camp. There are no phones allowed, shabby cabins and only a handful of campers. The only good turn of events is Benji her longtime crush is among the sparsely populated camp. This highlight of her summer is overshadowed by the camps strange and harsh rules given out by the head of the camp Galiana Moore, who seems crazy most of the time, and who unfortunately has taken a liking to Faye. As if things were not bad enough she notices an odd rash that has consumed most of her back from the lighting strike that seems to not only be growing larger but glowing slightly. Before she knows it, Faye finds herself caught in a whirlwind of uncertainty, torture, calamine lotion and romance....All in the name of summer camp. But as the summer unfolds, she realizes there is much more to Camp Milestone than meets the eye. Will she be able to unravel the mystery that surrounds this unusual camp? And more importantly, will she be able to survive the madness long enough to put the pieces together?

Milestones is a delightful story about the true meaning of self-discovery, love and friendship, book one of the Milestones trilogy takes readers into an imaginative and amazing new world which gives a whole new meaning to summer vacation.

Milestones is the debut young adult novel for Samira Armin Hodges a fresh and exciting new voice in the literary world.

My Review:

I went into this one kinda blind, but hopeful. The website captured my attention and sealed the deal for me. I dived in without really knowing what I was getting into. To be honest It took about 20+ pages to get really into it. Faye is a character that reflects, pretty much every teenage girl in the world. She's a bit of an outsider, she loves a boy that doesn't know she exists..oh and she's best friends with the most popular and prettiest girl in school! Super! So basically she gets shipped off to camp by her parents after a very crazy thing happens (won't give too much away as this is kinda important) and finds herself sitting on a plane with who might you ask? The boy she loves! They have no idea why they are going to the camp and no idea what its really all about.

This book really took me by surprise. I loved the "twist" and really didn't see it coming. I really enjoyed the surprises and loved the characters. It had a slow start but after that it was a pretty fast read. Milestones was a very good read! I can't wait for the sequel!
