So I will use this as my starting off point! Here goes! (Oh! If you do want to join along with me then use Mr. Linky at the bottom! You don't have to read the whole weekend! This is a casual thing so please do join if you have some spare time! )

Book Spot Light and Future Review: Rise Again

About the Book:
It’s Fourth of July in Forest Peak, California, a small town on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Sheriff Danielle Adelman, a troubled Iraq war veteran, thinks she has all the problems she can handle in this all-American town after her kid sister runs away from home. But when a disease-stricken horde of panicked refugees fleeing the fall of Los Angeles swarms her small mountain community, Danny realizes her problems have only just begun—starting with what might very well be the end of the world. She thought she had seen humanity at its worst in Iraq, but nothing could prepare her for the remorseless struggle to survive a world overrun with reanimated dead and men turned monster. Obsessed with finding her sister at all costs, Danny’s epic and dangerous journey across the California desert will challenge her spirit, and bring her to the precipice of sanity itself.

My Review:

This was an excellent piece of Zombie fiction! Danny is such a kick-ass character! I loved how she was like the friggen Energizer Bunny! I think that her theme song should be that Chumbawamba song.."Tubthumping" would be the her theme song! (she gets knocked down but then she gets up again...you get the picture, right?) The action is great! I hated those stupid Hawkstone guys! Grrrr!

I loved how this book was just proportioned all equally! Usually books like this are either heavy on the human drama and light on the horror/action, or vice versa, but this was well balanced! You felt for the good guys, you wanted them to survive. I seriously chewed my fingernails to stumps while reading this!

Loved it with a capital L!

Review: Blood Trinity

I just finished this book and have one word for it. "WOW!" I honestly cannot wait for the next book in this series! I've never read a Sherrilyn Kenyon book before and will now officially kick myself! There was action and humor and a kick ass female main character! How cool is the name Evalle?

Anyhoodle, this was a fun romp through urban fantasy. I'm a total newb when it comes to UF but I liked how it blended the present with the fantastic! I live like 40 minutes away from the city the book is set in and I loved that it was THAT close!

I couldn't flip pages fast enough on this book! This is a good solid read!

Review: Immortal Beloved

About the Book:

Nastasya has spent the last century living as a spoiled, drugged-out party girl. She feels nothing and cares for no one. But when she witnesses her best friend, a Dark Immortal, torture a human, she realizes something's got to change. She seeks refuge at a rehab for wayward immortals, where she meets the gorgeous, undeniably sexy Reyn, who seems inexplicably linked to her past.

Nastasya finally begins to deal with life, and even feels safe--until the night she learns that someone wants her dead.

My Review:

I really enjoyed this book! I enjoyed how the story flowed. The characters were well written and seemed real. I actually really liked Nastasya and enjoyed watching her character grow. Reyn is quite a yummy character! I loved his backstory too!

I'm a BIG fan of this book now! Loved it! Can't wait for the next book!

John Dies at the End

From the Website:

It’s a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users can drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human.

Suddenly a silent, otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs.

Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity?

No. No, they can’t.

______________________________

Here’s some background on the magical and mostly retarded tale of how this book came to be:

Around the turn of the century, while working in a cubicle at an insurance company I, David Wong, wrote a “fictional” story about my brush with the supernatural and posted it on the web.

Over the years word of mouth buzz drew in more than 70,000 readers.

******
My Review:

Okay so you know what? This book was insane. But it was insane in a GOOD way. I felt like I had taken a long acid trip after I finished this book. I loved it. I loved the style of writing and I love the characters. I cannot remember the last time a book actually made me laugh out loud almost every other page!

My husband even picked it up and read it! He LIKED IT too! This never happens! He thought the writing was similar in style to Douglas Adams and his Hitchhiker's books. I was shocked that he enjoyed a book that I also liked!

There are so many quotes from this book that just had me giggling! I loved John! His random responses are just hilarious! Poor Dave. Really the guy needs to take a nap, and have a day that doesn't involve lamp-humping flying jellyfish!

If you have a sense of humor and enjoy laughing at oddball things then you should read this book! NOW!

What Are You Reading Monday?

So this weekend I got on a "spooky books" roll! I finished up John Dies at the End by David Wong and Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan!! So basically in a weekend I read 1 1/2 books! Yay me! :)

This week I think I'll stick with "octoberish" books like:

  1. Dracula The Undead by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt
  2. Still chugging thru the Historian
  3. Frankenstein's Monster by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe
Now if I go through those then I will be one happy lady! :) (The Historian is going to be read in bits so I have sectioned off about 150 pages to read this week!)

Books That Need Reviews:
  1. John Dies at the End
  2. Immortal Beloved
It's gonna be a busy week!

Mockingjay Review

I read Mockingjay for the read-a-thon last weekend and really enjoyed it. I wanted to wait a bit to review it so I could kinda stew on what I wanted to say. Without being all spoilerific, I will try and review it now.

It's been a short time since I read Catching Fire and I didn't double read, so when I opened Mockingjay I had a smallish case of amnesia, but that quickly vanished as the story progressed. I enjoyed the writing and of course the character development really was just spectacular! That is one of the biggest reasons I am a fan of this series.

Unlike some other books, where the heroine doesn't actually grow any during the story..*ahem..I'm looking at you Bella!* Katniss grows as a person and even though she's not exactly thrilled at the idea, she seems to grow into a kind of hero. I FELT for her. I wanted her to be happy and I wanted her to find her way. I love that about the Hunger Games series!

So Mockingjay is full of action and political scheming of sorts. I will be all vague now and say that the lead up to the end was well planned out and awesomely executed!

It is so hard to review without being spoilery. Seriously, this is one of the best finales that I have ever read! I of course was leaning towards a different choice for her love interest, but I still drooled over it. This book has everything you need for a good conclusion. The wrap up was well done. I cannot for the life of me think of any loose ends that were left untied.

Suzanne Collins you have done it! *slow clap* for you ma'am!

Guest Post: Goosebumps

Goosebumps

Contribution by Elmo Farmer

As the leaves turn colors and the air gets cooler every little kid know Halloween is just around the corner. For me as a college student, this time of year bring back memories of great Halloweens past. Another aspect of this time of year is the programming on satellite TV from www.bestchoicetv.com. Lots of shows I grew up watching are now aired just for Halloween.

One of these unforgettable shows that brings me back to my childhood is Goosebumps. Goosebumps was a tv series based on a book series. Each episode was another book. All of them frightening, and yet you couldn't look away. One of them was about a haunted doll. A second was about a kid who wanted to scare everyone and fell victim to a haunted mask. Each one taught a moral as the characters would get exactly what they wanted, only to realize how terrifyingly wrong they were.

To this day I can remember curling up in a blanket on the couch, my two older brothers sitting near me. All of the lights were on, even though they swore I was the only one who got scared. We would all jump at an unexpected action on the screen. Goosebumps will forever be a part of my childhood. Goosebumps will always creep me out a little, and it will always be a part of Halloween.

Death Notice

There's a murderer on the loose. He seemingly picks people at random. He likes to slit throats and embalm people, then stuff them into homemade caskets and dump the bodies. Oh and he also enjoys teasing the police by sending a faxed death notice BEFORE he kills. All of this happens in the small town of Perry Hollow.

Kat Campbell is the Chief of Police of Perry Hollow. A smart and serious lady that takes care of business. Typically that business consists of settling petty disputes, writing speeding tickets, and the typical events that happen in a small town. That is until she gets a call about a casket laying on the side of the road and goes to investigate. That call changes her life and the lives of the citizen's of Perry Hollow forever.

This is Todd Ritter's debut! I honestly couldn't tell! I really enjoyed Death Notice! I thought the mystery was well crafted and VERY interesting! I kept going..oooh *insert name* is the killer! I just know it! ..Wait...nevermind. Back and forth, til the end. I never actually guessed the ending. That was great!

Todd Ritter kept me guessing all through the book! Definitely a must read for the Mystery fan!

Here is a trailer for the book:

John Dies at the End by David Wong
2. How many books have you read so far?
3 so far!
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
I'm really hoping to finish John Dies! So far it's awesome!
4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?
Yup! I took off from work and arranged for my son to spend the weekend at his Grandpa's house! My husband works so until about 9pm I have the house to myself (oh yeah..well me and the cat!)
5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I called to check up on my son and to say hi! I did this after I finished my first book and was taking a little break. Then after a few hours he called me because his cousin was being mean! I talked him down and he calmed down.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
The MUNCHIES! Seriously, what is it with these things? I get the munchies like MAD when I do a read-a-thon!
7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

so far not a thing pops into my brain!

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?
I don't know. I'm having a really good time and wouldn't change anything!
9. Are you getting tired yet?
A little but stretching helps!

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
Have a notebook handy to jot down notes for your reviews! Oh and stretch every hour to help with energy levels and concentration!

Read-a-Thon Intro Meme

Where are you reading from today?
I'm reading from AL, specifically I'm going to be moving from my desk to my comfy chair, to the couch. I may even wind up on the floor! :)

3 facts about me …

I love to participate in these "thons!"
I love coffee!
I love sushi!
(okay these answers suck but it's early and I'm trying to hurry up and go back to reading!)

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?

At this time I have 11 books!

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?

If I read half of my books in my TBR I'll be very happy with myself! :)

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time?

Just have fun! Last year was so much fun! I loved how the book community gets together to cheer, read, and just love our books! It's a wonderful event! Don't focus on the end too much and just read great books! :)

Read-a-Thon Starting Line/Ending Line

Tuesday Teasers

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Miz B at Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

My teaser comes from the book Death Notice by Todd Ritter

"When you cut open a corpse, there's very little bleeding because circulation has stopped and most of the blood has settled. There's some leakage, but it's minor. Wallace said there was an unusually large amount of blood on George Winnick's lips."

Sunday Somethings: Or Me Geeking Out Over Read-a-Thons!

This ^^ has gotten me in a tizzy! I have so much geeky anticipation for this event! Really! I've got each day of this week planned out to help me optimize my reading experience! How nerdy is that? My BIGGEST is that on Friday (after school) we are going to let T (son) stay over at Grandpa's house for the weekend! That's right folks! I will have a kid free house for this RaT!! I am super excited about that! The last one I tried with him here and I failed at reading. I can't just plop his butt in front of the TV or the computer and be okay with that! It's cool in small doses but not for more than an hour and a half.

Monday -Friday I'll be getting my house as spotless as I can so I can concentrate on reading. I will be grocery shopping for snackage and drinks on weds (to cut back on the grazing that we would do if I got them today!) I will start tomorrow with getting my reading stack ready.

So what are you doing to prepare? Have you signed up yet? Are you going to be reading or cheering? ARE YOU AS GEEKED OUT AS I AM!?
