Review: Insurgent

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

My Thoughts:

I LOVED Divergent. I thought it was a breeze of fresh air into the YA genre. I loved the action and the thought provoking aspects too. Tris is a great character to get to know. She's got a little bit of everything, and definitely has that "real" quality about her.  She's no unbelievably beautiful, or super redonkulously smart. She's just normal. Well, minus that little issue where she can fit in with three different factions.

Insurgent, is a solid second part of a series. I can't quite put my finger on the problem but I didn't LOVE it. Now, please don't get me wrong I liked it a lot. I just didn't feel the same OOMPH that I did when I opened read Divergent. Tris evolves in a way that to me felt slow. Four seems more hulking figure in the background in this book, even though I know he's pretty much always in the middle of things. It just felt like he wasn't quite all there? Maybe that was the point?

The plot does however satisfy immensely! I thought the bickering factions, the background politics, and the OMG! What's going on!? aspect was super! I don't have any complaints about that at all! I know this is a second part of a story, I know that characters can't go through major evolutionary changes every five seconds, but there was something a little off about this one. I'm probably the only person in the world that feels this way!

All in all, Insurgent was fun. The story is great and I DO recommend it. I just had that one beef about it, which is probably just my nitpicky imagination!

  1. Okay I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only one who felt a bit disappointed in this book. It's amazing but it's just not as amazing. Still a great read though.
